Elephant Jungle Expedition

1 day

The is our most popular tour, combining our guest’s favorite activities into one action-packed day. You will have the once-in-a lifetime opportunity to bond with an elephant by spending one-on-one time with them. Feed all the elephants in the herd, swim and play with a baby elephant, learn how to make elephant medicine and enrichment activities for the elephants, and walk with them through the forest.

After befriending your elephant, have a delicious picnic lunch next to a babbling jungle river. Then take in beautiful landscapes on a hike through sun-soaked rice fields and lush jungle. Your guide will lead you to find hidden waterfalls where you can plunge into the refreshing water.

Then finish out your day by cooling off on a relaxing bamboo raft down the lazy Mae Wang river before saying goodbye to your new elephant friends. This will be a day unlike any other!

Get picked-up from Chai Lai (9AM) or from your hotel in Chiang Mai (between 8-9AM). Transportation is a traditional Thai songteaw (covered pick-up truck).

Start the day by making some elephant friends at our rescue elephant camp! Feed them snacks, take selfies, and learn how to give them simple commands. Each elephant has their own mahout, who will show you how to speak to them, stay with you for the duration of your experience, and tell you about the personality of their beloved elephant. Walk with your elephant through the jungle and then cool off together by bathing them in the river! (Please note: we do not offer elephant rides.)

This tour offers a delicious picnic lunch in the lush jungle. Enjoy a traditional vegetarian meal and fresh seasonal fruits as you look out onto to the babbling Mae Wang river. Please let us know beforehand if you have any dietary restrictions so we can accommodate.

The length and difficulty of the hike can be adjusted to fit your ability, just let us know! On average our guests prefer to hike 2-3 hours through lush jungle terrain. Along the way you will see a wide variety of animals and plants, and your guide will share their expert jungle knowledge!

Hike to a secluded jungle waterfall where you can cool off by taking a dip! This is the perfect way to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

This tour also includes visiting a beautiful Karen Hill Tribe village where guests will have the opportunity to explore the traditional way of life. See traditional Karen houses, and learn how local villagers raise animals, plant crops, and enjoy their rural lifestyle. There are local shops in each village, so this can also be a place to grab a quick snack or buy a one-of-a-kind souvenir from a local artisan.

Cool off in the lazy Mae Wang River on a traditional bamboo raft ride! Your guide will steer you around the winding river and small rapids as you relax. And what can make a raft trip better than a cold beverage! Our cafe has a delicious selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages to make the ride even more enjoyable. Simply inquire at our cafe before you depart. Depending on the seasonal height of the river, rides can be from 40 min to 1 hour in duration. While most areas of the river are very shallow, lifejackets are available upon request.

Return to the Chai Lai Orchid elephant camp and say goodbye to your new elephant friends. Your transportation will be waiting to drive you back to Chiang Mai. This tour typically finishes around 5PM.

This trip is well organized but relaxed. In order to give you the best experience and maximum time doing your preferred activities, there’s no set schedule. It’s Thai time!
