Secret Temple Trek

Discover an ancient temple hidden in the jungle

Secret Temple Trek

1 day

Hidden against the flanks of a jungle mountain, the 700-year-old temple of Wat Luang Khun Win waits for you to discover it. Just when you think you have passed any signs of settlement, it emerges, its dragon-coils and golden spires seeming to grow straight from the forest floor.

This beautiful temple is so remote and difficult to reach that it remains largely undiscovered by tourists. Its remoteness also allowed it to be preserved in its original form, when most other ancient temples were destroyed through attempts to conquer the Lanna Kingdom and have since been rebuilt.

The trek begins in a quaint Karen Hill village nestled in a valley. Explore the traditional Karen way of life before beginning a beautiful walk winding up into the hills. On rainy days, clouds descend, the trees become immersed in stillness, and only the sounds of cicadas and dripping water can be heard in the glowing fog. On warm days light plays through the leaves joyfully.

After exploring the peaceful temple grounds, enjoy a relaxing picnic lunch at a nearby waterfall. Take a refreshing dip in the water or simply enjoy the idyllic lush jungle surroundings.

Itinerary

If you are already staying at one of our Chai Lai Eco Lodges we will pick you up directly from the  (9AM). If coming from Chiang Mai, you can be picked up either at your hotel or at the Three Kings Monument (between 8-9AM). Transportation is a traditional Thai songteaw (covered pick-up truck).

This trek starts and ends in a beautiful Karen Hill Tribe village where guests will have the opportunity to explore the traditional way of life. See traditional Karen houses, and learn how local villagers raise animals, plant crops, and enjoy their rural lifestyle. There are local shops in each village, so this can also be a place to grab a quick snack or buy a one-of-a-kind souvenir from a local artisan.

This hike is one of the most strenuous treks we offer, but also the most rewarding! It usually takes 2 hours uphill to arrive at the temple, and 1.5 hours to hike back down to the start point, with many opportunities to rest and enjoy the scenery along the way. The lush jungle terrain offers a wide variety of animals and plants, and your guide will share their expert jungle knowledge as you hike!

Explore the peaceful grounds of the hidden jungle temple Wat Luang Khun Win. Learn about the history of the temple and enjoy the many beautifully ornamented buildings at your own pace. Please remember to be respectful, which means taking off your shoes when entering the temple, and making sure that your shoulders are covered (for women we recommend bringing a light scarf as a wrap). You may also make an optional donation to the temple if you wish.

This tour offers an unforgettable waterfall picnic lunch. Your guide will pack a traditional vegetarian meal and fresh seasonal fruits, and you can enjoy your lunch next to a gorgeous jungle waterfall. Please let us know beforehand if you have any dietary restrictions so we can accommodate.

Cool off by taking a dip in a secluded jungle waterfall. This is the perfect way to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings before you begin your return hike down the mountain.

After hiking back to the Karen Hill Tribe village start point, your transportation will be waiting to drive you back to Chai Lai Orchid or back to Chiang Mai. This tour typically finishes around 3PM.
